Aging Room is one of the most acclaimed boutique cigar brands of the past decade — a company built on the philosophy that great cigars, like great wine, are defined by the quality of their aging. Created by Rafael Nodal, a Cuban-born music industry executive turned cigar entrepreneur, Aging Room has earned multiple year-end awards and a devoted following among smokers who appreciate refined blending and premium tobacco.
This guide covers the Aging Room story, breaks down their major lines, and helps you find the right Aging Room cigar for your palate.
The Aging Room Story
Rafael Nodal's path to the cigar industry was unconventional. Born in Cuba, Nodal grew up surrounded by tobacco culture but pursued a career in music, eventually becoming a successful executive in the Latin music industry. His passion for cigars never faded, though, and in 2011 he channeled that passion into founding Aging Room.
Nodal's concept was inspired by wine culture — specifically, the idea that aging transforms good raw materials into something extraordinary. Just as fine wine develops complexity in the barrel, premium tobacco develops depth and nuance through careful aging and fermentation. Nodal built Aging Room around this principle, using small batches of aged tobaccos to create cigars with the kind of refined complexity typically found in much more expensive brands.
For production, Nodal partnered with Tabacalera La Palma in the Dominican Republic and later with AJ Fernandez in Nicaragua — two of the most respected cigar manufacturing operations in the world. These partnerships gave Aging Room access to premium tobaccos and expert rolling while maintaining the small-batch, quality-focused approach that defines the brand.
The breakthrough came quickly. Aging Room cigars earned multiple 90+ ratings from major publications, and the Quattro Nicaragua was named Cigar Aficionado's #2 Cigar of the Year in 2019 — a remarkable achievement for a relatively young brand.
Today, Nodal also serves as head of product capability at Tabacalera USA, overseeing brands for the broader portfolio. But Aging Room remains his personal passion project and continues to produce some of the most thoughtful, well-crafted cigars in the boutique space. The brand is featured in our boutique cigar brands guide.
Aging Room's Major Lines
Quattro Nicaragua — The Award Winner
The Quattro Nicaragua is Aging Room's most celebrated cigar. Produced by AJ Fernandez, it features a dark Nicaraguan Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan fillers, delivering a medium-to-full body with rich flavors of dark chocolate, espresso, pepper, sweet cedar, and a long, complex finish. Its near-top ranking by Cigar Aficionado validated Aging Room as one of the elite boutique brands. Available in multiple vitolas, the Maestro (6x52) is the most popular.
The Quattro Connecticut variant uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper for a milder, creamier experience with nuts, vanilla, and gentle spice — a great beginner option.
Bin No. 1 — Dominican Excellence
Bin No. 1 showcases Dominican tobaccos from Tabacalera La Palma. Using a Dominican Corojo wrapper with Dominican fillers, it delivers a medium-bodied smoke with complex layers of cedar, leather, sweet spice, and cocoa. The blend demonstrates the depth that Dominican tobacco can achieve when properly aged and blended. Available in multiple sizes and a solid value pick.
Solera — Inspired by Sherry Aging
The Solera series takes its name from the solera aging process used in sherry and balsamic vinegar production, where older and younger components are blended together. Aging Room applies a similar philosophy to tobacco, blending aged and younger leaves to create a complex, layered flavor profile.
Solera Sun Grown — A Dominican Sun Grown wrapper with medium-to-full body. Earth, leather, cocoa, and sweet spice.
Solera Maduro — A Dominican Maduro wrapper adds dark chocolate, coffee, and sweetness.
Solera Shade — An Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper for a milder, creamier experience with nuts and cedar.
Solera Corojo — A Dominican Corojo wrapper for a spicier, more peppery profile.
Pura Cepa — Pure Nicaraguan
Pura Cepa (meaning pure stock
or thoroughbred
) is a Nicaraguan puro produced by AJ Fernandez. It features an aged Nicaraguan Habano wrapper delivering a full-bodied smoke with intense flavors of earth, pepper, dark chocolate, and sweet spice. This is Aging Room's boldest line — crafted for experienced smokers who enjoy Nicaraguan power. Pairs exceptionally with bourbon — see our whiskey pairing guide.
Rare Collection — Ultra-Premium
The Rare Collection represents Aging Room's most exclusive releases. Using the oldest, most carefully selected tobaccos in their inventory, these limited-production cigars deliver extraordinary complexity and refinement. Each Rare Collection release is a showcase for Nodal's blending philosophy at its most ambitious.
Other Notable Lines
Aging Room Quattro Original — The original Dominican version of the Quattro, featuring a Sumatra wrapper with Dominican fillers. Medium-bodied with nuts, cream, and sweet spice.
Aging Room Piccolo — A small-format cigar designed for quick smoking sessions. Available in multiple wrappers, delivering the Aging Room experience in about 30 minutes. See our cigar sizes guide.
Aging Room Pelo de Oro — Uses rare Pelo de Oro tobacco (a Cuban heritage seed that is notoriously difficult to grow). Medium-to-full with complex sweetness and spice. Limited production.
Aging Room M356 — A medium-bodied Dominican blend featuring a Brazilian Mata Fina wrapper. Cocoa, sweet spice, and cedar.
